Antoine Semenyo injury concern as he withdraws from international duty

Antonie Semenyo will miss Ghana’s fixtures over the current international break due to a swollen leg which requires treatment.

The 26-year-old has been in impressive form so far this season, scoring twice and providing three assists during Manchester City’s perfect start to the campaign which has seen them win all five of their Premier League matches.

Both those goals came during the thrilling 5-3 win over Sunderland on Sunday, with Semenyo playing the full 90 minutes at the Etihad.

He is clearly feeling the effects of that dramatic game, though, as he will now miss the trio of Ghana matches scheduled for the international break.

Ghana football association president Kurt Okraku told Asempa FM that Semenyo has been in touch with coach Carlos Quieroz and explained that he is struggling.

‘Antoine and the coach spoke, and he told the coach, “If you need me, I will come down for the medical team to re-examine me, but the truth is that my leg is swollen, and we need to treat it,’ said Okraku, via Ghana Soccernet.

‘As a leader, if you want to know your players, and in this particular case, we know the players and how honest they are when it comes to situations like this, you’d have to ask yourself whether you’d allow Antoine to continue with his recovery and be ready for Man City and for Ghana during the next window.

‘Or have Antoine fly down to Ghana to undergo an MRI and then ask him to go back because he can’t play. His leg is swollen.’

The current international break is an extremely long one, with Ghana playing two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Gambia and then a friendly against Morocco.

Semenyo will miss those games but hope to be involved in Manchester City’s next outing, at Anfield on October 11.

The winger has started all five Premier League games so far this campaign and would be in line to continue that run if he is fit for the heavyweight clash.

The former Bournemouth star has talked up the impact Enzo Maresca has made at Manchester City despite being handed the seemingly unenviable task of replacing Pep Guardiola.

‘We’ve been together for seven or eight weeks now, so it’s not been too long, but we’re doing well. We’re winning our games and we’ll keep improving,’ he said.

‘Everyone feels good. I mean, it’s where we want to be. We’re not going to get too complacent, too relaxed. We know that there are a lot more games to go. And yeah, we just want to continue winning. So we just have to keep going.’
